Gimmal Records Advisory: IPRM Retirement

Last Updated: March 10, 2026

Summary

In January 2026, Microsoft announced that In Place Records Management (IPRM) features will no longer be supported as of April 2026. This will impact the record Lock and Unlock functionality in Gimmal Records when using the SharePoint Online Connector. While we do not expect there to be impacts to functionality in April, Gimmal has prioritized the development of a replacement locking method.

Remedies

Gimmal has a two-prong plan for addressing this cessation of support. The path forward will depend on the level of Microsoft licensing in place at the client (E5 or equivalent or E3 or equivalent).

E5 (or equivalent)

Gimmal Records will transition to a label-based record locking approach using a dedicated Purview retention label. Here are some key details:

  • An update to the SharePoint Online Connector (SPOC) will be released in March 2026. Once enabled and configured, this update will allow day-forward record locking, with availability as follows:

    • On Premises: March 10th

    • Gimmal Hosted Cloud: Weekend of March 20th

  • A separate conversion utility will be released to update existing IPRM-locked records to the new label-based record locking.

    • This utility will be available for both on-premises and cloud before the end of March.

  • Aside from creating a single label, clients will not have to interact with Purview to implement this approach.

Additional details and step-by-step guidance will be available shortly.

E3 (or equivalent)

Gimmal is researching a replacement for IPRM-based record locking that will not require Purview-only features. We will share the approach and timeline once the approach has been internally validated.
